CREDIT REPORT

As part of the updated Fair Credit Reporting Act (FACTA) passed in January 2004, U.S. citizens have the right to annual free credit reports from all three major reporting agencies. The program expanded to Pennsylvania on September 1, 2005.

The central site www.annualcreditreport.com, allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

You can request your credit report three ways: Over the internet by going to www.annualcreditreport.com; by phone, by calling toll-free at 1-877-322-8228; or by completing the Annual Credit Report Request Form, located on the Federal Trade Commission web site, and mailing it to:

IDENTITY THEFT

What is Identity Theft?
Identity theft occurs when a person steals your personal information and uses it to open accounts, purchase merchandise, get loans, or engage in illegal activities. Unfortunately, most people don't realize it has happened until after their credit has been damaged. There are many hi-tech and low-tech strategies criminals use to steal identities.

How They Get Info:
  • Stealing purses and wallets
  • Stealing mail
  • Submitting a “change of address” form to redirect mail
  • Going through personal and business trash
  • Obtaining employment / personnel records from an “insider”
  • Using the internet to gather information
  • Obtaining credit reports by posing as employers or landlords

How the Info is Used:
  • Opening credit card accounts using the victim's name, date of birth & social security number
  • Running up a balance and not paying the bill
  • Establishing mobile phone service in the victim's name
  • Opening checking accounts and writing bad checks on those accounts
  • Financing auto loans in the victim's name

How to Avoid Being a Victim:
  • Call and cancel unused credit cards
  • Never have Social Security Card in possession
  • Shred all important papers, bank statements and receipts
  • Only carry one or two credit cards
  • Call credit card carrier if you don't receive your card
  • Report any unauthorized purchases
  • Remove name from list sold to companies offering pre-approved cards
  • Never allow anyone to write your credit card number on a check
  • Never give out your Social Security number over the phone
  • Pick new checks up from the bank, never have them mailed directly
  • Place passwords on bank, credit and phone accounts

If You Become a Victim:
  1. Call the fraud department of the three major credit bureaus and request a fraud alert on your file. Request in writing, hard copies of your credit report.
  2. Contact creditors on any compromised or fraudulent accounts via phone and follow-up with written documentation. Close those accounts and open new ones with a new PIN.
  3. File a report with the police department where the identity theft occurred and get copies of the report.
